Tips for traveling to San Diego during the holidays

San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to be prepared when traveling this holiday season. A large part of the airport's campus is under construction due to the New T1 project. The following travel tips are provided by SAN:

Arrive at the airport early if you plan to travel ahead.

Make sure you arrive two hours before flight departures, both domestically and internationally.

Traffic is expected to increase and airport roads will change as a result of construction. There will be a lot of congestion around 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

Typically, the peak screening hours at checkpoints are between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). Up to an hour's wait might be expected.

Allow additional travel time when returning a vehicle to the Rental Car Center. Rental Car Center and airport terminal shuttle buses operate 24 hours a day.

Ensure you know where the airlines are located—in Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

There is limited parking, so reservations are highly recommended.

Currently, Terminal 1 Parking Lot is closed permanently. There are only two on-airport parking options: Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Terminal 1 Curbside Valet.

san.org / parking recommends booking parking at Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet as early as possible.

Terminal Loop Shuttle transports passengers between both terminals efficiently. We offer curbside pick-up every 10 minutes.

In recent years, public transit has become more accessible to the airport.

COASTER will get you to Santa Fe Depot in Downtown San Diego or MTS Trolley will get you to Old Town Station.

It operates between 5 a.m. and midnight, every 15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends and holidays on Route 992.

Flyer shuttles connect the Old Town Transit Center and the airport for free, so you can travel from one to the other conveniently.

Driving should be handled by someone else.

Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, or other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great ways to reach SAN. We would like to inform you that a temporary, pedestrian crossing with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge to connect Terminal 1 with the Ground Transportation island.

You can get rides from friends or family.

Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.

Avoid circling the airport and further congested terminal roadways by using the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road. In the Cell Phone Lot, passengers can wait for their arrival free of charge. Following the detour signage to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 will take you back to Baggage Claim for passenger pickup.

Shop, dine, and relax once you arrive at the airport!

A variety of shops and San Diego restaurants are available throughout the terminals to serve travelers with meals, snacks, and more, though availability and hours may vary. For hours and locations, visit san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.

Airline lounges and spas offer much-needed relaxation before flights. Please visit san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax for hours and locations.

We have a range of eco-friendly and sustainable stores and food options available to suit all passengers.
