This holiday season, San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to be prepared for your trip. A large portion of the airport's campus is under construction as part of New T1. SAN offers the following travel tips:
Prepare for your airport trip by arriving early.
Arrive two hours before your domestic and international flight departs.
Construction will increase traffic and alter airport roadways. Congestion is at its worst from 4am to 6:15am, 9:30am to 12:30pm, and 8pm to 12am.
Typically, the TSA's peak screening hours are between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. There could be extended wait times of up to an hour.
Make sure you allow extra travel time when returning a vehicle to the Rental Car Center. There are free shuttle buses running between the rental car facility and the airport terminals 24 hours a day.
Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 is where the airlines are located.
Reservations are highly recommended due to limited parking.
A permanent closure is in effect for Terminal 1 Parking Lot. In consequence, parking on-airport is limited to Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
Please reserve your parking at Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet as early as possible on san.org / parking.
Shuttle service between both terminals is provided efficiently by Terminal Loop Shuttle. The curbside pick-up service is available every 10 minutes.
With public transit, you can get to the airport in more ways than ever.
COASTER will take you to the Santa Fe Depot train station in downtown San Diego or MTS Trolley will take you to Old Town Station.
There are three stops along Route 992. It operates from 5 a.m. to midnight, every 15 minutes during the week and every 30 minutes during the weekends and holidays.
A convenient electric shuttle service connects the Old Town Transit Center and the airport for free.
Don't drive yourself.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, or other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great ways to get to and from SAN. A temporary, pedestrian crossing with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge to connect Terminal 1 with the Ground Transportation island.
Provide rides with the help of family or friends.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
By parking in the Cell Phone Lot on McCain Road off Terminal 2 West, you will avoid circling the airport and further congesting the terminal roads. In the Cell Phone Lot, passengers can wait for their arrival free of charge. If you want to pick up passengers at Baggage Claim, follow the detour signs to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
