Preparation is key before arriving at San Diego International Airport (SAN) if you're traveling this holiday season. There are ongoing constructions on the airport's campus as part of the New T1 project. Here are SAN's travel tips:
Arrive at the airport early if you plan to travel ahead.
Arrive two hours before flight departures for domestic and international flights.
There may be an increase in traffic and changes to airport roadways as a result of construction. It is most congested from 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.
It is typically between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. that checkpoints experience peak screening hours. It is possible that you might have to wait up to an hour.
Please allow additional travel time if you are returning a vehicle to the Rental Car Center. There is a free shuttle bus that runs between the Airport Terminal and the Rental Car Center 24 hours a day.

It is strongly recommended that you make reservations for parking because there is limited space.
Parking lot 1 at Terminal 1 has been permanently closed. Due to this, on-airport parking is limited to the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet at Terminals 1 and 2.
For Terminal 2 Parking Plaza and Curbside Valet, it is strongly recommended that you make reservations as far in advance as possible at san.org/parking.
Between the two terminals, the Terminal Loop Shuttle transports you efficiently. We offer curbside pickup every ten minutes.
By using public transit, you can get to the airport more easily than ever before.
You can take the COASTER to Santa Fe Depot train station in Downtown San Diego or take the MTS Trolley to Old Town Station.
On weekends and holidays, Route 992 operates every 30 minutes on weekends and stops at Terminals 1 and 2.
Connecting Old Town Transit Center and the airport is the free San Diego Flyer.
Driving should be handled by someone else.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, or other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are excellent ways to get to and from SAN. A temporary, ground-level crosswalk has replaced the bridge connecting Terminal 1 with Terminal 1 ground transportation island.
Provide rides with the help of family or friends.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
There is no need to circle the airport and further congest the roads leading to the terminal by using the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road. There is a free cell phone lot on the airport's grounds where passengers can wait for their arrival. Follow the detour signage to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to return to Baggage Claim to pick up your passengers.
