Tips for San Diego Travel during the Holidays
This holiday season, San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to be prepared. The airport's campus is under construction due to the New T1 project. Travel tips provided by SAN include:
Arrive early at the airport when you plan ahead.
Make sure you arrive two hours before flight departures, both domestically and internationally.
There will be increased traffic and changes to airport roadways due to construction. Congestion is least likely to occur between 4 a.m. and 6:15 a.m., from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and between 8 p.m. and 12 a.m.
Checkpoint screening typically occurs between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There could be extended wait times of up to an hour.
It may take a little extra time to travel to the Rental Car Center if you are returning a vehicle. From the Rental Car Center to the terminals, free shuttle buses are available 24 hours a day.
Check Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to find out where the airlines are located.
It is strongly recommended that reservations be made due to limited parking.
There is a permanent closure of the Terminal 1 Parking Lot. Thus, on-airport parking is limited to Terminal 2 Parking Plaza and curbside valet at Terminals 1 and 2.
We strongly encourage you to reserve Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet parking well in advance at san.org / parking.
Using the Terminal Loop Shuttle, you can travel efficiently between both terminals. Every ten minutes, curbside pickup is available.
Traveling by public transit to the airport has never been easier.
To get to Old Town Station, you can either take the COASTER or MTS Trolley from Downtown San Diego's Santa Fe Depot.
MTS Route 992 runs every 15 minutes during the week, every 30 minutes during weekends and holidays, and stops at Terminals 1 and 2.
Connect Old Town Transit Center and the airport with the free San Diego Flyer, an electric shuttle service.
Driving should be handled by someone else.
Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other airport-permitted commercial transportation options are great for getting to and from SAN. Note that a temporary, crosswalk with a traffic light and crossing signal has replaced the bridge connecting Terminal 1 to the Terminal 1 ground transportation island.
Rides can be provided by friends or family.
Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.
Avoid circling the San Diego airport and further congested terminal roadways by using the Cell Phone Lot at Terminal 2 West Parking Lot on McCain Road. You can wait for arriving passengers in the Cell Phone Lot for free. Following the detour signage will lead you back to Baggage Claim where passengers can pick up their baggage.
Upon arrival at the airport, sit back, relax, and enjoy shopping, dining, and entertainment!
Travel necessities, meals, snacks, and more are available within the terminals. Hours and availability may vary. For hours and locations, go to san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.
Before taking off, you can relax at airline lounges or spas. SAN's Shop-Dine-Relax website provides hours and locations.
With options for every passenger, including eco-friendly and sustainable grocery stores, SAN caters to everyone.
