Getting the most out of your holiday trips in San Diego

San Diego Travel Guide: Vacation + Trip Ideas

The Best Holiday Travel Tips in San Diego

This holiday season, San Diego International Airport (SAN) wants you to be prepared. The new T1 project has forced much of the airport's campus to undergo construction. Here are some travel tips from SAN:

When traveling to the airport, arrive early and plan ahead.

When flying domestically or internationally, make sure you arrive two hours in advance of departure.

Traffic is expected to increase and airport roads will change as a result of construction. Congestion is most common between 4 a.m. and 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 12 a.m.

In general, peak screening hours at airport checkpoints occur between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. and between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to Transportation Security Administration (TSA). There was a possibility that wait times could extend up to an hour.

Please allow additional travel time if you are returning a vehicle to the Rental Car Center. Airport terminals and the Rental Car Center can be reached by free shuttle buses 24 hours a day.

Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 is where the airlines are located.

The amount of parking is limited, so reservations are strongly advised.

We are permanently closing the Terminal 1 Parking Lot. Because of this, on-airport parking is limited to Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.

We strongly recommend that you reserve parking at the Terminal 2 Parking Plaza or Curbside Valet as far in advance as you possibly can at san.org / parking.

Terminal Loop Shuttle transports passengers between both terminals efficiently. A curbside pickup service is offered every 10 minutes.

Traveling by public transit to the airport has never been easier.

Alternatively, take the trolley to Old Town Station or COASTER to Santa Fe Depot.

On weekends and holidays, MTS' Route 992 runs every 30 minutes from 5 a.m. to midnight at Terminals 1 and 2.

There is a convenient electric shuttle between the Old Town Transit Center and the airport that is free.

Rather than driving yourself, let someone else do it.

Taxi, Lyft, Uber, shuttles, and other San Diego airport-permitted commercial transportation options can be used to reach and leave SAN. A temporary, ground-level crossing signal and traffic light replaced the bridge connecting Terminal 1 ground transportation with Terminal 1 ground transportation island.

Friends or family can provide rides.

Picking someone up? Use the Cell Phone Lot.

By parking in the Cell Phone Lot on McCain Road off Terminal 2 West, you will avoid circling the airport and further congesting the terminal roads. Arriving passengers can wait in the Cell Phone Lot, which is free and convenient. Follow the detour signage to Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 to reach Baggage Claim to pick up passengers.

Shop, dine, and relax once you arrive at the airport!

You can find travel essentials, meals, snacks, and more inside terminals. Availability and hours may differ. The hours and locations are available at san.org / Shop-Dine-Relax.

Relax in airline lounges or day spas before a flight. Find out opening hours and locations at san.org/Shop-Dine-Relax.

It offers eco-friendly and sustainable food and stores for all passengers.
