We have created this helpful guide to the 2023 Del Mar Fair to help you prepare for one of the most popular summer events in San Diego.
The Del Mar Fair: A History
This fair has been going on since the 1880s in San Diego! County fairs in the United States began as agricultural festivals, like this one. Contests like pie baking, fruit and vegetable tasting, and horse races were held in the community. In 1936, the Del Mar Fairgrounds opened after a series of moves. After purchasing 370 acres of beachfront property, the 22nd District Agricultural Association became the permanent home of San Diego County Fair. In 1917-18 (during WWII) and 2020 (due to the Covid19 pandemic), the fair was held in San Diego every year except for two years. It returned in 2022 in its full-scale form following a smaller version in 2021.
A number of name changes have been made to the fair over the years. It was renamed the Southern California Exposition and San Diego County Fair in the 1950s and shortened to the Southern California Exposition. This event was officially renamed the Del Mar Fair in the 1980s. Despite being renamed San Diego County Fair in 2002, most locals still refer to it as Del Mar Fair. There's no need to get confused if you hear multiple names mentioned, Del Mar Fair and San Diego County Fair are in fact the same thing!
Through the Ages: Del Mar Fair Themes
The Del Mar Fair has been featuring a different theme every year since 1998, and different exhibits and activities are centered around that theme, which means every visit feels like a brand new experience. There are tons of fun and exciting characters to encounter every year in each of our unique themes.
The general parking fee at the fairgrounds is 20 USD. Early arrival is recommended, as the lot fills up quickly. The nearest parking lot to the main entrance costs 50 USD.
Parking at the horse park 2 miles away for 10 USD with a free shuttle is a discounted option. Taking the free shuttle to the fairgrounds from Torrey Pines High School is the cheapest option.
Whenever you visit a state or country fair in the United States, you're sure to find one thing: lots of fried food. There is no exception when it comes to the San Diego County Fair. It's pretty much impossible to find a fair without funnel cakes, fried twinkies, fried Oreos, chips on a stick, cheese fries, and pretty much anything else a carny could possibly create.
Try ice cream Sunday with all the fixings or indulge in a gingerbread house. We certainly expect some unique takes on smores with this year's outdoor theme!
Those seeking something healthier can find vendors cooking vegetarian burritos and tacos at the Del Mar Fair. There is something for everyone. There are so many choices, so come hungry!
